OUR COMPETITIONS

BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP

Given that the Billiards Pairs competition was to cease operating, the presumed reasons for its demise, the recognition of the desirability to keep Billiards alive and the fact that there had never been a Harrow League Billiards Championship all contributed to the ideas behind experimental competitions introduced in the 2002/3 season.

Two knockout individual competitions, an "Intermediate" and "The Championship", redrawn each round were set up.

Based on knowledge of the entrants and performances in the preceding Summer Billiards competitions, the Committee nominated a set of players who gained automatic entry to "the Championship". The remaining entrants played in the "Intermediate" competition with the semi-finalists progressing into "the Championship".

The 'experiment' was repeated in the following season by which time it was considered that the competitions were viable enough permanently to form part of our competitions schedule.

At this juncture, it was decided that the Billiards Championship would forthwith be known as "THE EDDIE RICHES BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP" in recognition of the HDSBL President's long, valuable and valued contribution to Billiards and Snooker in general and to the HDSBL in particular.

"Intermediate" competition matches are of "250 up"; "Championship" matches of "300 up" except for the final which is of "500 up".

Players are required to contact each other to arrange their matches and to submit the results by a deadline date set for each round. Matches are played at the venue of the "first drawn" player except for the semi-finals and final which are scheduled and played at neutral venues.

The entry procedures were amended for the start of the 2005/6 season to allow all entrants to specify whether they wished to enter either or both competitions whereupon the Billiards sub-committee vets the Intermediate competition entry rejecting any player it considers to belong to the 'elite' group.
