In 1958, J.W.C. (Bill) Dwyer (of the BRENTHAM CLUB; League Chairman 1958-69 and President 1969-85) donated a trophy to be awarded annually to the League's individual snooker champion. This was retrospectively engraved with the names of the winners of the championship which had been running since 1950.
The championship is open to all members of member clubs, taking the form of a knockout competition, re-drawn each round.
Matches are the best of 3 frames in the early rounds progressing to the best of 5, with the final played over the best of 7.
Players are required to contact each other to arrange their matches and to submit the results by a deadline date set for each round. Matches are played at the venue of the "first drawn" player except for the semi-finals and final which are scheduled and played at neutral venues.
Notable past winners of the Dwyer Bowl are Ronnie Gross (English Amateur snooker champion 1957/60/62), Geoff Foulds and Tony Meo. The 2001/2 season's runner-up, Martin Gould, subsequently became the 2002 English Amateur Snooker Champion, and then won this competition in 2002/3 and the next 5 seasons (an unprecedented 6 successive wins). He then won the English Amateur Snooker Championship again in 2007.
